BDHLS is really unique!  It was just five years ago when BDHLS was formed by the merging of two vibrant communities.  This extraordinary marriage has created an atmosphere of warmth and hospitality.

Beit David was formed by a collection of South American transplants lead by the late Rabbi Dovid Bryn, z’l.  Rabbi Bryn was known throughout the community for his kindness and sensitivity to all individuals.  His doors were always open.  Proud and adoring of their Rebbe, the followers of Rabbi Bryn did all they could to facilitate his mission of outreach and ahavat yisrael.  Although his life was far too short on this earth his impact was felt by all who knew him.  He lit a fire in his congregants to further his mission of openness in the Highland Lakes and Aventura communities.  It was their dream to build a shul that would be a community center and foundation for a thriving community.  In April 2008, after years of planning and dreaming, our community opened the doors of our new home.

While Rabbi Bryn and his followers drew in Jews through their warmth and outreach, The Highland Lakes Shul was drawing in Jews by the sweet melodies of Reb Shlomo Carlebach, z”l.  Known for their openness this unique crowd continued to thrive and outgrow each of its locations.  Regardless of whether the shul met in a garage, a boardroom of a neighboring shul, or in its shteibl house, HLS always offered the community a high level of Torah classes and an energetic and kvannah-filled tefilah.

Once the marriage of the two congregations took place, BDHLS got right to work on building its first home.  Our building is a manifestation of the hopes and dreams of those who have graced our community:

A wide open lobby to be welcomed in

A main sanctuary designed with incredible acoustics for its lively Friday night davening

A library for all to feel welcome to come and learn Torah

A sizeable reception area for large Shabbos gatherings and family functions

But most importantly, like Abraham’s tent, our shul has doors on all sides to welcome all Jews into our community!
